A Democracy or a Republic?

Throughout history there have been many different forms of government, some good and some bad.  Some different forms of governments are Anarchy, Democracy, Monarchy, Oligarchy, Republic, and Theocracy, along with Totalitarian governments. Do you know where the United States fits into the different forms governments?   We hear all the time, our nation is a democracy.  Are we? Why do you suppose our form of government hasn’t changed its’ governing documents in over 200 years?  While many others have changed theirs many times over? Where did our Founders get the foundation for the structure of our government?

All of our Founders knew the Bible. It is obvious when you read their own words in their writings and in the records of their deliberations in our early government and in the official government documents…they learned to read using the Bible and were raised reading it and living the values and principles taught in it. They also knew what it was like to be victims of tyranny and oppression.  They publicly acknowledged God, their dependence upon Him, and gave Him the credit and honor in their successes, as evidenced in 15 Prayer Proclamations issued by the Continental Congress during our fight for independence and the establishment of our Nation. As the records show they made every effort to establish our nation according to God’s form of government and its structure is from the Bible.  So many people refer to our nation as democracy, including many of our political leaders.  But were we established as a democracy?  …..What is a democracy?  A true democracy is a government where all the power lies with the people, who exercise the lawmaking power through majority votes instead of through elected representatives. So because this form of government is based on popular beliefs or sentiments of the majority of the people at a particular time, it changes frequently and is therefore very unstable.  A democracy is seen during Jesus last few weeks on earth. When He entered Jerusalem, the people enthusiastically welcomed Him and treated Him like a Hero in Matt. 21:9…but then the next week these same people all said Crucify Him! Matt 27:21 …A democracy is an unpredictable government where reason and deliberation are forfeited for selfishness, desires of power, control and wealth. Ideas, feelings and beliefs that all change at a moment’s notice.  It seems like these days, that is what we are becoming in America.  I have often thought we have moved into an Oligarchy…which is a government in which only a small group of elite people hold the power. In the Bible the Sanhedrin was a ruling Oligarchy.  Luke 22:66

Our nation and its government was actually established a Constitutional Representative Republic. This is the highest form of republican government and one that representatives are elected by the people, who are not sovereign, but are subject to a higher authority… a sovereign law, a written Constitution. This form of an elective representative constitutional republic is described in Exodus 18:21, “But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.”   This is what our Founder John Adams described as a “government of laws not of men.”   In our original governing document, the Constitution, that has so far, endured,  but has been severely misinterpreted and often completely ignored these days tells us in Article IV Section 4, “The United States shall guarantee to every State in the Union a Republican form of Government.”  And our Founders made it clear in many of their statements that we were never to become a democracy. One of the Founding fathers, John Adams said “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”   Adams also said,

Democracy, will soon degenerate into an anarchy, such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes, and no man’s life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure and every one of these will soon mold itself into a system of subordination of all the moral virtues, and intellectual abilities, all the powers of wealth, beauty, wit, and science, to the wanton pleasures, the capricious will, and the execrable cruelty of one or a very few.”

From the Bible we see that God’s form of government established through Moses and Jethro in Exodus chapter 18, is what our Founders modeled our American government after. We see that God established His government after He had established His laws. Our Constitution in its original form is based on the “laws of nature and natures God” and is subject to and in harmony with the highest law… God’s Law. This is the framework to govern our nation.  It is a law that is higher than any government officials, and a law to which everyone including government officials and representatives must conform. The higher law identifies inalienable rights that God has given to every individual, providing equal protection for each one of us to practice our God given rights, stating specifically in our Declaration of Independence, “that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men”  so the purpose of government first of all is to secure… to protect each one of our rights. In addition our laws were based on the 10 Commandments…thou shalt not murder, steal, bear false witness, etc.

Our Founders openly acknowledged that God and the Bible helped produce our unique Constitutional Republic.  We can only preserve it if we as citizens know, understand and heed the directives from the Bible for choosing the right kind of people to be placed in positions of leadership and authority at all levels.  “But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. At this point in our history we have failed to do that and allowed corruption, greed, and lawlessness to become prevalent in our government.

In our Republic specific duties of the President are different from what most people believe today. The President, is not the direct representative of the people, but the President, according to the Constitution, serves as an ambassador on behalf of all the States in foreign affairs, he is the representative of the States, the general of the military under a declaration of war. He is supposed to create trade and peace negotiations on behalf of the States in foreign relations, and should be nominating cabinet members that will function under the responsibilities of the Constitution, nominate Supreme Court Justices, who will support, defend and uphold the U.S. Constitution, who are to be confirmed by the Senators who are supposed to be directly representing the States, and are supposed to be selected by their respective State Legislatures, and this was the way it was done before the 17th amendment. This amendment upset the balance and structure of our government and should be repealed.

The Electoral College is a very important and unique part of our republican form of government in electing our President. The Electoral College is not a political party, but a constitutionally established entity, and is not supposed to be partisan based. But because we have a 2 party system we have states that are primarily democrat or republican. Electors choose for the State. The Electoral College also protects the less populated states like NM and gives the people a voice. Without the Electoral College, the more populated States, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Southern Florida, a small part of Texas, and New York would be choosing the President and every other part of the country wouldn’t even count. So without the E C, it would be pointless for us in NM to eve vote in the Presidential election! Entire States would lose representation! It would be as if we didn’t even exist.

A Constitutional Republic is the highest best form of government, one in which we choose who will represent us, our values, our principles and protect our liberties that have been given to us by God, and that can only be preserved and protected by God fearing people…these representatives are not sovereign but are subject to a higher sovereign law…a written constitution that is in harmony with God’s will and law.  That is why our nation was so blessed for so long…. America became the most productive, prosperous, powerful, peaceful and the most benevolent nation in the history of the world. America is the longest ongoing Constitutional Republic in history. And now it seems we are not just losing it but we are giving it away! What are we handing down to our posterity now?  How will our grandchildren and great children live? Will they be free or will  they be slaves to tyranny and oppression?    God tells us in II Chronicles 7:14 “…and If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Jesus taught us to pray “ …..Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

This is my prayer…I hope it is yours as well.
