Some Truths About Thomas Jefferson

So many folks don’t know and understand the truth about the Founders of this once great nation, like Thomas Jefferson.

We have available to us original writings and official documents by our founders that allow us to know the truth. Please let us all seek the truth while it can still be found. There is so much out there now that paints Jefferson, and our other founders and so much of our history in a negative light that simply is not true. Yes some of our history is not pretty……and World history as well…some of it is very ugly and awful and we need to know that history too. But we need to know the truth in all of it,…the bad and the good. I want to focus on the good in this message.

There are claims that Thomas Jefferson, removed all the references to anything supernatural from the Gospels when he prepared two New Testament works, which today is called “The Jefferson Bible”. Unfortunately many Christians today, repeat these claims without first verifying these claims these claims.

Jefferson prepared his first Abridgment of the New Testament for missionaries to the Indians,  to provide an easy to read Bible text by which to introduce Indians to Jesus and Christianity. Abridgments have been written for use among young people and new readers even today. Jefferson’s work was essentially the “red letters” of Jesus compiled into a shorter work and it included passages from Matthew 9, showing the miraculous resurrection of Jarius’s daughter, the healing of the bleeding woman, and the healing of the two blind men. Also included were and miracles such as the healing on the Sabbath in Luke 14:1-6 etc. Jefferson also included Mark 14:61-62 (Jesus saying that He was the Son of God.) and so on.

Today’s scholars and writers ignore not only the content in and the specific purpose of each of Jefferson’s works, but they also disregard the well documented historical facts that he financially contributed to the distribution of the complete Bible, owned a number of complete Bibles that he read and studied, financially supported the printing of editions of the whole Bible. Jefferson gave away complete Bibles to his family members, openly used the full Bible in educational institutions he helped start or direct, including Washington’s public schools and the University of Virginia.

Written in the front of his own personal Bible, Jefferson wrote:

“I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus. I have little doubt that our whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of our creator.”

In 1803, Congress, ratified a treaty with the Kaskaskia Indians. Most of the members of the tribe had been converted to Christianity, and Congress gave a subsidy of $100.00 a year for seven years for the support of a preacher so that he could “instruct as many … children as possible.”

On April 21, 1803, Jefferson wrote this to Dr. Benjamin Rush (also a signer of the Declaration of Independence): “My views…are the result of a life of inquiry and reflection, and very different from the anti-Christian system imputed to me by those who know nothing of my opinions. To the corruptions of Christianity I am, indeed, opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines in preference to all others.”

In 1902 congress reprinted 9,000 copies of Jefferson’s “Morals of Jesus of Nazareth” at government expense.

The modern claims about Jefferson and the Bible are erroneous. There actually is no “Jefferson Bible” and I firmly believe that he would have objected to either of his works being labeled as a “Bible”.

Jefferson told his close evangelical friend and fellow signer of the Declaration of Independence, Dr. Benjamin Rush: “My views are very different from that anti-Christian system imputed to me by those who know nothing of my opinions.”

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. and in all your getting, get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7

Our Founders and early government representatives, and our judges believed in God,…the God of the Bible and knew and understood the Scriptures… Schuyler Colfax, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Vice-President in the Grant administration, made the following statement: “Man derives his greatest happiness not by that which he does for himself, but by what he accomplishes for others. This is a sad world at best – a world of sorrow, of suffering, of injustice and falsification. Men stab those whom they hate with the stiletto of slander. But it is for the followers of our Lord to improve it, and to make it more as Christ would have it. The most precious crown of fame that a human being can ask is to kneel at the bar of god and hear the beautiful words, “Well done good and faithful servant.”

“Separation of Church and State” (which appears no where in any of our nation’s official documents and especially not in our Constitution) as it is defined today, is a LIE, and should never be used in the context of the 1st amendment. When you go and read the discussions that took place among our founders, that are on record and available at you will find that phrase was never used in their discussions and Thomas Jefferson did not even participate in the framing of the 1st amendment. Learning and knowing our TRUE HISTORY is so incredibly important, now more than ever. Our Founders and early government officials never intended for God and the Christian religion to be expelled from government, nor did they believe that the political process and the choosing of our representatives be not discussed or preached about from the pulpits of our Christian worship assemblies! It is all a lie! Don’t believe the lies! Search for, learn and understand the truth while it can still be found! For the sake of our children and grandchildren and the future of our once great nation!

“A morsel of genuine history is a thing so rare as to be always valuable.” Thomas Jefferson

“Everyone in America should be well acquainted with our country and its history. Every child should be taught well our history from Kindergarten through College.”   And since it is not at present being taught in our public schools, I believe it needs to be taught in our Bible classes and from the pulpits of our worship assemblies.

When we know and understand our past it will enable us to judge the future, giving us the experience of other times, the failures and successes, what really works and allows prosperity and peace, and what doesn’t. The Bible is the best history book to start with, and then on from there to the history made and recorded after.

Thomas Jefferson knew because he himself studied the previous failed attempts at government. He understood actual history, the nature of God, his laws and the nature of man. That happens to be way more than what most understand today. Jefferson really knew his stuff. A voice from the past to lead us in the future:

John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the white House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement: “This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

“When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe.” — Thomas Jefferson

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

— Thomas Jefferson

“It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.”

— Thomas Jefferson

“I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” — Thomas Jefferson

“My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.” — Thomas Jefferson

“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” — Thomas Jefferson

“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”

— Thomas Jefferson

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” — Thomas Jefferson

“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”

— Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.”   He also said this:

“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property – until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”

It difficult to understand why people want to believe all the bad stuff about our founders, and not the good things. They were not perfect but they did establish a form of government that has been the freest, most productive, prosperous, peaceful, powerful and benevolent nation in the history of the world, with the longest lasting Constitutional Republic ever! The United States of America has been the greatest nation in the world and we are allowing it to be destroyed.

“Seek good and not evil, that you may live; And thus may the Lord God of hosts be with you, ” Hosea 5:14

“But let justice roll down like waters And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Hosea 5:24

Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States (1801-1809) in his 1801 Inaugural Address said:

“Enlightened by a benign religion, professed, indeed, and practiced in various forms, yet all of them inculcating honesty, truth, temperance, gratitude, and love of man; acknowledging and adoring an overruling Providence, which by all its dispensations proves that it delights in the happiness of man here and his greater happiness hereafter. With all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and prosperous people? Still one more thing, fellow citizens – a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned…..”

You should understand what I deem the essential principles of our government….Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political …. the arraignment of all abuses at the bar of  public reason, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus and trial by jury impartially selected….”

“When all government shall be drawn to Washington as the center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.” ~ Thomas Jefferson ~

Our founders knew that we as a nation could lose our freedoms from the gradual encroachments of our government, and now we are witnessing this very thing! Through government regulation, taxation, gun control, forced equality through redistribution of wealth, universal government controlled health care, and most importantly the removal of religious beliefs/faith, and expressions of it from our public institutions, they are taking control. It seems as if America has lost her way, and we are in a battle for our nation’s soul. Will we stand up for truth, freedom and liberty and restore America or will our grandchildren and great grandchildren become subjects, slaves under a tyrannical Marxist/Socialist regime?  “We The People” still do have a choice. Is our motto “In God We Trust” still true? God can save America if we will turn back to Him. God created us free, and gives us a choice. Will we listen to Satan and all of his lies, and become slaves, or will we listen to God and His Truth and remain free?

If America and civilization as we know it is to survive we must defend it with everything we have. There really is” nothing new under the sun” ….history repeats…..the outcome can and will be different depending on what we learn from history, if we learn anything at all and what we do with the lessons learned. Liberty and justice for all can prevail, or Slavery under Tyranny will reign, and it will not be pretty! We are at a time (as Ronald Reagan said some 50 years ago), for choosing. It is our choice, will we choose liberty over tyranny? The outcome will be what our grandchildren and future generations will be living in. What is liberty worth to you?

Thomas Jefferson’s Prayer for The Nation:  March 4, 1801

“Almighty God, Who has given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people, the multitude brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endow with Thy spirit of wisdom those whom in Thy name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth. In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
